LaneFirst Guides / Google review link

How to find your Google review link, and use it.

Your review link takes customers straight to the form where they leave a Google review. Here's how to find it in about a minute, where to put it, and what to say, using words that follow Google's rules.

The short version

1 minute to get the link from your Business Profile.
Same day is the best time to send it, while the job is fresh.
1 reminder is the most you should send. Then stop.

Google's help page: Tips to get more reviews

The link is free and comes with every verified Business Profile. You only need to get it once.

  1. Sign in

with the Google account that owns or manages your Business Profile.

  2. Open your profile

by searching your business name on Google, or open the Google Maps app and go to your business.

  3. Look for "Ask for reviews"

On the web it usually sits among your profile tools; in the Maps app it's under your customers and reviews area. Google moves it around now and then, and the label sometimes reads "Get more reviews".

  4. Copy the link or save the QR code

You get a short link that opens your review form directly, and on most profiles a QR code you can download.

Where to put it

The link only works if customers see it at the right moment. These five places cover almost every job.

  • A thank-you text after the job. The single best place. Short, personal, with the link at the end.
  • Your invoice or receipt email. One line under the total: "Happy with the work? A quick Google review helps us a lot."
  • A QR code card in the truck. Hand it over at the end of the job, or leave it with the paperwork.
  • Your email signature. Low effort, and it works for repeat customers.
  • Your website's thank-you page. After someone sends a quote request or books online.

What to say

Keep it short, personal and easy to ignore. The ones below use a fictional business; swap in your names and your link.

After a job Text message

Hi Sam, thanks for having us out today. If you have a minute, a Google review would mean a lot to our small team: [your link]. Thanks! Ana, Desert Ridge Gutters

A few days later One reminder

Hi Sam, hope the new gutters held up in Saturday's rain. If you get a chance, here's that review link again: [your link]. No worries if not!

On the invoice Email footer

Happy with the work? A quick Google review helps local businesses like ours more than anything: [your link]

Four things not to do

Breaking these rules can get reviews removed or a profile penalized.

  • Don't ask only happy customers. Selecting who gets the link based on how they feel is called review gating, and Google doesn't allow it.
  • Don't offer anything in return. No discounts, gifts or prize draws for reviews.
  • Don't write reviews for customers. Not even "to save them time". Reviews have to be their own words.
  • Don't collect reviews on a tablet at your counter. Many reviews from the same device and location can be filtered out as suspicious.

Questions

I can't find the "Ask for reviews" button. Why?

Usually one of two things: the profile isn't verified yet, or the Google account you're signed in with isn't an owner or manager of the profile. Check who has access in your profile settings.

Does the review link ever change?

The short link is tied to your profile, so it normally stays the same. If you ever merge or recreate your profile, get the link again and update your templates.

Can I send the link to everyone, even unhappy customers?

You should. Google doesn't allow asking only customers you expect to be happy. Asking everyone the same way is both the rule and the best way to get a believable rating.

Can I give a discount to customers who leave a review?

No. Google doesn't allow incentives for reviews, and in the US the FTC's rule on consumer reviews also restricts paying for reviews.

How many review requests should I send?

One request after each job and at most one reminder. More than that annoys people and rarely adds reviews.
